Stainless Steel, Balcurris Park
Kevin Atherton's pair of stainless steel hemispheres were sited in two different parts of the new Balcurris Park in October 2009. The respective hemispheres, and the subjects reflected on their surfaces, are continuously filmed by two CCTV cameras, which transmit the two images to a central broadcasting point. There, the images are juxtaposed and simultaneously broadcast on a plasma screen integrated into the architecture of an exterior wall of the new pavilion.
Playing with ideas of surveillance and the preciousness of the art object, the two hemispheres only come together to form a full circle on the plasma screen. The perfect surfaces of the spheres will transform over time - through the natural elements and physical interaction - with the tongue-in-cheek addition that whatever happens is monitored to an extent.
