Oil on car bonnets
After a period of research in Ballymun, Kindness used the commission opportunity both to develop his interest in the physical resemblances in the features of siblings, and to expand his own practice by working outside the studio in a dialogical way with the sitters for his portraits. To spread the word, posters were hung in the hairdressers, the health clinic and the local shops, and the project was even announced from the pulpit by the local priest, inviting sisters from the area to be photographed with a view to having their portraits painted and hung in a prominent public location. A couple of months later, an exhibition of the photographic studies of all 48 women who presented themselves for inclusion in the project was held, after which Kindness selected two sets of sisters, Michelle & Yvonne Dunne, and Rose Tracey & Kay Jones, whose portraits are on permanent exhibition in the Atrium of the Civic Centre.
