MY SPACE
My Space was a project by artist Cecilia Moore, which ran for a year from 2008 to 2009, changing every few weeks. Six plexi glass units each on a wooden plinth traveled to various venues across Ireland.
Cecilia was commissioned by Breaking Ground, the Ballymun Regeneration Ltd per cent for art programme, to undertake a new work for Ballymun. Cecilia put out an open call for submissions in early 2008 for artworks to be displayed in the perspex units throughout the course of the year.
Cecilia received a phenomenal response to My Space, with over 70 artists participating in the project over the course of the year. My Space launched in June 2008 in Ballymun Civic Centre, and traveled to the National College of Ireland in the IFSC Dublin; The Helix, DCU; MacDonagh Junction, Kilkenny; Limerick City Museum, returning to the Civic Centre in Ballymun in July 2009, presenting 3 themed displays for it's finale.
Cecilia's project originated out of a desire to offer a democratic way of presenting work. It would give artists the opportunity to make artwork for a unique format, in an unusual setting. By constantly changing every few weeks, the work would also entice the viewer to make return visits, continually revitalising these micro-galleries and their surrounding environment.
The theme of the project was inspired by the virtual world of personal disclosure, exploring ideas of identity, personal interests and opinion, through 2 and 3-dimensional material. Participants were free to propose whatever they felt was appropriate within the constraints of the perspex box. True to the spirit of the project, the displays saw the work range from the provocative, to the oblique, to the beautiful, and presented a diverse mix of artworks all on a level playing field, from established artists, to up and coming artists, and to people who never before considered themselves artists, proposing objects for display for the first time.
My Space offered a moment to engage and reflect on personal touches and individuality, in a world increasingly succumbing to a need for constant social networking and virtual existence. In this sense the project was very antitheses of the 'myspace' social networking site, where meaningless gestures become the modus operandi. Celilia's 'my space' offers a moment to present a personal or significant small gesture, and in its way reminds us of the individual's sole voice within the greater world.
My Space was delighted to present the work of the following artists over the course of the year:
Seamus McCormack, Patricia McKennna, Piia Rossi, Ciaran Breathnach, Elke Thonnes, Aideen Doran, Aimee Slater & Rachael Bennett, A & A Sproule, Cecilia Moore, Brigid MacCarthy, Judyth Satyn, Dorothy Ann Daly, Victoria McElligot, Damien Fay, Willie Abbott, Long Weng, Rita Cahill, Alison Brent, Diana Caramaschi, Collette Moore, Sarah Armstrong, Noreen Lynch, Franck de la Mercedes, Sandra Petit-Frere, Julie Spollen, Cris Neumann, Sharon Murphy, Rowena Keaveny,, Eimearjean McCormack, Gerard Dunne, Cordula Hansen, Roger O’Reilly, Helena Zeeman, John O’Connor, Ann Mulrooney, Seamus Nolan, Fiona Coffey, Aileen-Anne Brannigan, Mai Ryan, Cornelia Schmidt, Robert Dunne, Darren Caffrey, Linda McKay, Saidhbhin Gibson, Brigid Teehan, Jerry Cahir, Kate Howard, Liz Nilsson, Helen Barry, Christopher Boland, Verona Stellet, Carla Burns, Rowena Keaveny, Eoin Dunlop, Patricia Casey-Dunlop, Siobhan O’Malley, Ciara McMahon, Fergus Grant-Stevenson, Joan Henderson, The Bureau, Dexys Midnight Runners, Queenie Barnes, Elsie Barnett, Seamus Ruddy, Suzannah Vaughan, Elaine Hurley, Mary A Fitzgerald and Margaret Tuffy.
